AP/Honors HW Assignments 2015/16
Due Sept. 2nd:Poster: Visually express the idea with words and images: “No text is worth a life, it can wait” or “Don’t text while driving”. You can use your own quote or message. Use poster paper and black markers. Color with markers, color pencils or paint. 2-3 hours
Due Sept. 9th: Tea or coffee: Set up tea or coffee for two at home or in a coffee shop. Draw in dark pencil or color pencil. Sit at the table and draw from your perspective. Include lots of details: spoons, sugar packs, tea pot, pastries, plates, flower vases, table cloth patterns, tea bags, a book or the morning paper. Spend 1-2 hours.
Due Sept 16th: Expressive color Self Portrait: Use a mirror to draw your face and neck, use light pencil on neutral color paper. Have a light source on one side of your face so the other side is in shadow. Using pastels choose blues and purples or blues and greens for shadows and white, yellows and soft orange for the light. If you’d like add some kind of other imaginary, surreal or expressive elements like, tattoos, a pattern in the hair, flowers, flames, hats, feathers, or scales. Please don’t use photos. 1-3 hours
Due Sept 23rd: Faucet value study: Use a metal faucet up close in the kitchen or bathroom to draw in detail. Sketch lightly to fill the page. Use high contrast and a range of 7 values. Draw the water from the faucet and include dishes, soap, shampoo bottles, tiles, or whatever details that are interesting. 1-2 hours
Due Sept. 30th: Plant or tree value study: Draw a house plant, rose bush or tree using charcoal or color pencil with lots of pressure. This should be a close up detailed study of the plant, flowers or tree leaves. Please pay close attention to the specific twists and turns of the leaves. 2-3 hours
Due Oct. 7th: Bicycle, motorcycle or car : sketch a close-up of a bike, motorcycle or car. Use cast shadows, high contrast and value to show different textures and form. Please don’t use photos. 2-3 hours.
Due Oct. 14th: Food drawing with high contrast: Set up a plate of food that looks interesting and yummy like a tall sandwich, tacos, a burger, cake, ice cream with fruit or whipped cream. Use pastels or oil pastels on colored paper. Fill the page. 2-3 hours
Due Oct. 21st: Self Portrait with sunglasses: Use a mirror and wear sunglasses while drawing yourself. Focus on the details and values in the reflections of the glasses. Use dark pencil or color pencil. One option is to draw yourself in a car using the rearview mirror.
Due Oct. 28th: Shiny still life objects with light and shadow: Combine 3-5 objects, two that are glass or metal and use an obvious light source from one side. Use dark pencil, 4B or darker. Draw on large paper and fill the space. Focus on value transitions: are they smooth and slow or sharp and quick?
Due Nov.11th: Paintings on Collage, (2): Collect collage images and cutouts from newspaper and craft paper for the backgrounds. Arrange and glue down on matt board. Draw the face or person over the collage in pencil first. Use pen and ink to get a varied line. Use charcoal and chalk to bring out values in the image. Use paint to color one or more areas, (transparent or opaque).
Due Nov. 18th: Shoes: find a pair of worn out boots, converse, soccer cleats or complex and detailed shoes, (no flip flops please); sketch a light gesture to fill the page. Add detail and value with high contrast. 2-3 hours.
Due: Dec. 2nd: Concentration idea sketches: choose 3 different possible concentrations and do a series of 4 thumbnail sketches of each idea. Bring in all 12 sketches for discussion.
*All work is to be done in addition to Advanced Art class assignments and should be done outside of your scheduled art class.
*Work is graded on effort, use of time and turning it in on time. 10% will be deducted each class day it is late.
*Work is to be photographed after each class critique and uploaded. Breadth 1-15 should be completed by Dec. 3rd for half of your midterm grade.

**Turn in 5 Quality pieces to be matted (AP only)
May 6th: Submit Portfolios to AP College board website (AP students only)
