Welcome to Trig/Precalculus!
The
word Trigonometry comes from the Greek words meaning “triangle measure”.
Trigonometry deals with the relationships between the sides and angles of a
triangle. The tools learned in Trigonometry are used in many fields such as
astronomy, geography, satellite navigation, electronics, pharmacy,
architecture, and many, many more.
Precalculus
will build on the topics learned in Algebra 2 like exponential functions,
logarithms, and complex numbers. This part of the course will also introduce
you to new topics such as polar coordinates, vectors and limits. Precalculus
will prepare you for college level mathematics courses.
Required tools:
·
3-ring binder
·
Composition book (with sewn binding)
·
Pencil and eraser
·
Red pen
·
Lined paper
·
Graph paper
·
Book
·
Scientific calculator(not a cell phone calculator)
·
Graphing Calculator ( optional) (TI 84 is a good one)
Assignments:
You
will be given at least 1 assignment everyday.
Just like in sports, dance, music, acting, etc. you must practice math
with focus in order to succeed. This class requires a great deal of hard
work and concentration. Each problem will be different and require skills
learned in previous courses. You must do your homework every
night and concentrate while you are working to succeed in Trig/Precal. It is
important to get the phone number of at least 2 classmates to check on
assignments in case of absence. Points
are earned by completeness of assignment, neatness, showing work, self
correcting and accuracy.
·
Every assignment must be done on a separate piece of paper in pencil
and be properly labeled. No name means no credit. I will not
grade papers done in pen.

·
You must write each problem and show work. Draw any diagrams associated with the
problem. Use a complete sentence to
answer word problems. Please box your
final answer.
·
Fold your paper in half vertically and work down the paper using no more
than 2 columns. Do not crowd your work.
Leave a blank line between each problem so corrections can be made.
·
Problems must be numbered and in order.
·
Check all odds in the back of the book. Check evens in class.
·
Correct all incorrect problems. Show all corrections with a red pen .
·
Homework is due at the beginning of the next class. I do
not accept late work. Be sure to
bring work home the day of class.
·
I will check each day to be sure that you have done the assignment. If
all problems are written out and have work shown, I will consider your
assignment completed. Do not erase work and leave a problem blank.
·
Work that is turned in late due to an excused absence must be marked
“absent” with the date(s) absent at the top of the page. All absent work should be in by the Monday
following your return.
·
Any work turned in late due to an unexcused absence will not be
accepted.
·
Some assignments will be collected and graded for accuracy. Some
assignments will only be checked for completeness on the due date.
·
Homework is the key to
understanding and success in Trig/Precal! Assignments build on each
other. Skipping one assignment could make understanding the rest very
difficult. Attempt assignments in a timely matter so that if you need help
during tutorial, there will be one available to you.
Portfolio/Notebook:
Your
math portfolio consists of the composition book with daily notes and warm ups
and a separate, well-organized 3 – ring notebook for this class. You need to have three sections in your
notebook. All work should be dated,
labeled and filed in reverse order in your notebook. These will be checked randomly.
·
Information section- Keep your assignment sheets, syllabus, information
sheets for projects, etc. here.
·
Assignments- all assignments should be kept
·
Other- anything that doesn’t fit into the previous categories should go
here i.e. projects, writing topics, notebook checks, group work, …
Tests and Quizzes:
·
You will take one to two quizzes per chapter. Some will be announced, some will not.
·
You will take a chapter test each chapter. These will cover the current chapter and
possibly some material from previous chapters.
·
If you are absent the day before a test, you will still be expected to
take the test with the rest of the class.
If you miss the two classes before the test, you may opt to take the
test the next tutorial.
·
Make-up tests or quizzes will be given only at tutorial. For an excused
absence, make–up will be allowed within two tutorial periods.
·
If your absence is unexcused on a test or quiz day, you will receive a
0 on the test or quiz.
·
There is no speaking, turning around or passing of items during the
entire testing time, even if you are finished.
·
Cheating will not be tolerated! If a student is caught cheating, there
will be no points awarded and no chance for make-up. A referral to the administration will be
given. No sharing calculators.
·
After completing the test or quiz, you should work on the assigned
homework.
Facebook Page: I have created
a facebook page for my two Trig/PreCalc classes. This is a great tool for
communication. You can post questions and your classmates can give you a little
help. I will also watch the page and offer a bit of help when I can. I will be
watching this page and may award extra credit to students who are using it as a
way to get help or to help others. The page is Trevino Trig.
Participation:
You
are expected to participate fully in and out of class. Your participation is therefore part of your
grade. You may earn points by answering
questions, presenting homework solutions, or completing extra assignments given
by me. Participation points may also be
lost if you do not meet the following expectations.
Expectations:
·
RESPECT: In order for us to have a
successful and fun year, we must all show respect for everyone that enters this
room. This includes using only
appropriate language. Everyone needs to
feel safe in order to participate.
·
Cheating: All work that is
turned in must be your own. I will
follow the school policy for cheating.
·
Tardies: You are
expected to be in your seat and prepared to learn when the bell rings. I will follow the school tardy policy.
·
Absences: If you are not in class, you are responsible for finding out
what you missed and turning in assignments by the Monday after you return. You should get two classmates’ phone numbers
in case of an emergency. If you cut
class, be prepared to face the consequences which include a detention or work
program, a call home, and no credit for work.
·
Take care of your personal needs before class. You will be allowed 3 trips from class per
quarter without penalty. Each trip after 3 will result in loss of participation
points for that day. If you do not use your 3 per quarter, you will be awarded
extra participation points.
·
Anything that is distracting from your or others learning process is
not allowed and will be taken away. This
includes other class assignments, make up, cell phones, ipods,
etc. The use of cell-phones in any way
will not be tolerated!!!! I will take them away and turn them into the office
for an administrator to deal with and take away all participation points for
that day.
·
Any problem that arises will be dealt with immediately with a call
home, a detention, a work program and/or a referral.
·
Remain in your seat until the bell rings.
·
I expect to have an educational and fun year. I am here to support you and your
learning. Please come see me when you
need help.
Grades:
Tests/Quizzes: 50%
Assignments: 25%
Participation: 5%
Final: 20%
Grades
will be available on my website and will be updated about every 2 weeks. You should always be aware of your
grade. If you have any questions about
your grade, ask me.
I
use a standard grading scale:
A 90 – 100%
B 80 – 89%
C 70 – 79%
D 60 – 69%
F Below 60%
Tutorials
are a wonderful time to get a little extra help or to just get some work done.
If at any time during the year you are having difficulties, please come see
me. Together we can work out almost
anything.
