1.  Formal Curricular Components

 

A.  Reading: CORRECTIVE READING

 

 

B.    Writing: EXPRESSIVE WRITING

 

 

C.    Fluency:  READ NATURALLY

 

 

2.     Informal Curricular Components

 

Approximately 30% of instructional time consists of interaction with: 

  1. Content-area text (social science, science, etc.),
  2. Literature-based text, and
  3. Authentic text (newspapers, letters, announcements, etc.).

 

These learning activities are structured to increase:

 

A.  Comprehension

Metacognitive tools (writing structures, approaches to text)

Cognitive tools (Thinking Maps)

Text-based practice (details, themes, inferences)

B.  Vocabulary development

            Word study

            Emphasis on high utility words

C.  Fluency

            Structured practice using appropriately leveled materials

Read Naturally fluency program

D.  Love of reading and learning through print and writing
