Chemistry Prelab Format

Chemistry is a laboratory science and involves a good deal of experimental work in the lab.  In order for you to receive the maximum benefit from your lab work you must be prepared to do the experiment when you arrive in class.  In addition, since lab texts could be easily damaged during lab work, you will not be allowed to use your lab texts during the experiment.  As a result, you will be required to do a written prelab before entering the lab to do an experiment.

     A prelab includes the following:

     a. PURPOSE:

A very brief explanation of what you are going to accomplish in doing the experiment.  One

or two sentences will usually be enough. The first paragraph in the lab text usually explains

        the purpose of the lab.

     b. EQUIPMENT LIST:

A list of all lab equipment (glassware, etc.) that you will use during the experiment.  (Do not

include chemicals used in the lab, just lab equipment).  This will allow you to get everything

ready before you begin the experiment and will save you time.  List the equipment in one or

two COLUMNS rather than in a paragraph.

     c. PROCEDURE:

A list of the steps you will take to complete the experiment.  This should be in YOUR OWN

WORDS, and contain ENOUGH DETAIL so that you do not have to use the lab text.  Number

the steps the same as in the lab text.

     d. DATA TABLE:

A separate sheet of paper to be used as a data table.  The data table should be prepared ahead

so that it is ready to accept data from the experiment.

You will NOT be allowed to do the lab activity until you have completed the prelab.    Missed lab time will be made up after school or at tutorial.
