Honors Chemistry

Chapter 10-11 Study Guide

Can you:

·        Describe the behavior of gas molecules, and how this behavior allows gases to expand to fill their container, flow from place to place, have a low density, and are able to be compressed into a small space?

·        Define diffusion and effusion, and explain why gases exhibit these properties?

·        Define pressure and explain how a gas is able to produce this pressure (i.e. define gas pressure)?

·        Convert between the pressure units (atmosphere, millimeter of mercury or Torricelli, kilopascal, and pounds per square inch)?

·        Explain how a mercury barometer works?

·        State Boyle’s Law, and explain why this is true?

·        Convert between Celsius and Kelvin temperatures?

·        State what an “absolute” temperature scale means, and why we need an absolute temperature scale when using the gas law equations?

·        Explain why pressure changes when temperature changes?

·        Do calculations using the gas law equations (PV=k, P/T=k, V/T=k and PV/T=k)?

·        Determine the pressure inside a container of gas given a diagram of the container attached to an open-end or closed-end manometer?

·        State Avogadro’s Hypothesis, and the basic principle it is based on?

·        Define molar volume and STP, give the molar volume of any gas at STP, and calculate the molar volume under conditions other than STP?

·        Do calculations using the ideal gas law (PV=nRT)?

·        Define partial pressure, state the circumstances where partial pressure applies, and do calculations for partial pressure?

·        Explain the conditions under which a gas will behave ideally?

·        Explain the basic principles used in, and do calculations similar to, the labs we did in this chapter?

·        Do mole problems involving gaseous reactants or products using the ideal gas law?
