Pickleball Rules

    1. The COURT consists of the light green lines on the gym floor.
    1. The SERVE must be made with an underhand stroke, and the ball may not bounce prior to being struck. It must be hit in the air. Also, the server must keep one foot in contact with the ground when serving.

The serve will always start on the right hand side of the court. However, with each point scored by that server, (s)he will change sides with his/her partner and continue to serve.

The serve is made diagonally across the court and needs to land between the non-volley zone and the baseline. Only 1 service attempt is allowed for each point, unless the ball touches the net on the serve and lands in the proper service area – it will be taken over if this is the case. The serve is maintained until your team loses a point, then it is given to the other team.

A point is scored on serve only.

Players should not change sides of the court with their partners after a fault, unless they are alternating serve.

    3. SUBSTITUTES: Players will sub in after 3 points scored total between the two teams.

    1. DETERMINING SERVE: The team with their back closest to the perimeter wall starts serve.
    1. VOLLEYING: All volleying (hitting the ball before it bounces) must be done with the player’s feet behind the non-volley zone line. It is a point for the opponent if the player steps over the line to hit a volley.

A player may step into the non-volley zone to hit a ball that has bounced.

    1. DOUBLE BOUNCE RULE: Each team must play its first shot off a bounce. That is, the receiving team , must let the ball bounce before returning it to the serving team. The serving team must then let the return bounce before hitting the ball back. After the ball has bounced once on each side, it may be volleyed from behind the non-volley zone.
    1. FAULT: It is a fault and a point for the opponent when:
      1. The ball is hit out of bounds (Past the line. A ball on the line is good)
      2. The ball hits the net and lands on the side of the team that just hit it
      3. A player steps into the non-volley zone and volleys the ball
      4. The ball is volleyed before it has landed on each side once
    1. SCORING: A point will be scored on serve only, except those that hit the net and land in the proper service court of the opponent. If this occurs, the serve will be replayed.

A game is played to 11 points and a team must win by 2. If a team is only ahead by one point (i.e. 11-10), the match will continue until one team takes a 2 point lead.

      1. A server may not serve until his / her opponent is ready.
      2. If a player touches the net during a point with either the body or the paddle, it will be a point for the opponent.
      3. If a server swings and misses at a serve, it is a re-do.
      4. Only the player being served to may receive the serve, and you may not change sides of the court on return so the same person receives twice in a row. If the non-returning partner hits the ball on a serve, a point is scored by the serving team.
