  1. The two main areas of focus for instruction in the Sp Ed math classes include:

1.  Individual improvement of basic computational skills

2.  Increasing the proficiency with which the student is able to apply mathematical thinking to practical situations (problem solving)

The instruction al period is divided into two main sections each addressing the above areas of focus.  The first section of the class period is devoted to students receiving individualized instruction at the appropriate level of computational skills.  Each student has individual assignments within his/her book and receives coaching as needed to learn and practice skills.

The second period of instruction is devoted to math application activities in a whole group setting.  These include application of problem solving skills, experiences in measurement, graphing, use of fraction s, consumer math, etc.  The whole group instruction al period gives students an opportunity to practice cooperative learning as well.

Homework is given on a weekly basis.  Each homework assignment provides opportunity for problem solving practice and review of basic computational skills.

  1. Class materials used:

The major texts in use for individualized activities are:  Saxon math levels 54 through Algebra 1/2, consumer Mathematics, and Basic mathematics.  There are a number of supplemental texts and programs also in use as appropriate for individual students.

Problem solving curriculum is taken from a variety of sources including Project Aims, Dayle Seymour Publications , and Lakeshore Life Skills Publications.
